To Foster a Culture of Humanitarian Work

  • Encourage, inspire, and foster a culture of humanitarian work among NMU students, residents, fellows, house staff, dental, and nursing students.

Goals

The initiative aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. Long-term Impact: Create a lasting ripple effect, instilling humanitarian work habits as a permanent part of the character of NMU students and graduates.
  2. Awareness and Recognition: Utilize the awards as a vehicle to raise awareness about the importance of humanitarian work and recognize the efforts of those making a positive impact.
  3. Cultural Shift: Foster a culture at NMU where humanitarian work is valued and emulated, with students regarding award winners as exemplary role models.
  4. Inspiring Future Generations: Aspire to make Nishtar Medical University a place where doctors graduate with a passion for humanitarian work, inspired by the likes of Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Governance Structure

The governance structure is comprised of the following key roles and committees:

  1. Chairman Board: President, NANA
  2. Patron-in-Chief: Dr. Ahmed Saeed Khan
  3. Co-Patron-in-Chief: Vice Chancellor, NMU
  4. Advisor Board: Principal, NMU
  5. Board of Directors: 4 members 6. Selection Committee: 5 members

Eligibility Criteria for Award Application

To be eligible for the award, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. NMU Active Student: Currently enrolled students at Nishtar Medical University (NMU).
  2. NMU & Hospital House Officer/Resident/Fellow/House Staff: Medical professionals currently working at NMU or its affiliated hospital.
  3. Nishtar Nursing College Students: Students currently enrolled at Nishtar Nursing College. 4.
  4. NMU Dental Student: Students currently enrolled in the dental program at NMU. 5.
  5. Volunteer Work: Only volunteer work conducted during the current academic year will be considered

Humanitarian Work Categories

Here are the 5 categories for humanitarian work:

  1. Systematic Project: A well-planned and executed project addressing a specific humanitarian need.
  2. Patient Care: Initiatives focused on providing quality care and support to patients.
  3. Humanitarian Initiative in Nishtar: Projects addressing humanitarian needs within the Nishtar community.
  4. Community Initiative outside Nishtar: Humanitarian projects benefiting communities outside of Nishtar.
  5. Prospect/Retrospect Project: Projects that evaluate past initiatives or propose innovative solutions for future humanitarian work.

Volunteer Project Categories

Here are the 5 categories for volunteer projects:

  1. System Improvement Project: Initiatives aimed at improving existing systems or processes.
  2. Nishtar Medical College QI Project: Quality improvement projects specific to Nishtar Medical College.
  3. Nishtar Hospital Multan QI Project: Quality improvement projects specific to Nishtar Hospital Multan.
  4. Community Health Education and Promotion: Projects focused on educating and promoting health awareness in communities.
  5. Free Medical Camps Initiative for Disaster Management: Initiatives providing free medical camps and services for disaster management and response.

Evaluation Criteria for Project Applicants

Scoring Breakdown

  • Total Possible Score: 250 points
  • Total Judges: 5

Criteria

  1. Motive (10 points) • Description: Assesses the personal motivation or story behind the applicant’s decision to undertake the project. • Evaluation: Compelling personal narratives or experiences that drove the applicant to initiate this project.
  2. Leadership and Initiative (10 points) • Description: Evaluates if the applicant has taken on leadership roles, particularly whether they were the team leader for this or similar projects. • Evaluation: Demonstrable leadership skills, initiative in project management, or the ability to lead a team.
  3. Vision for Change (10 points) • Description: Focuses on the applicant’s vision for what changes they expect to see from the project. • Evaluation: Clarity, feasibility, and impact of the envisioned change.
  4. Communication and Interpersonal Skills (5 points) • Description: Measures the applicant’s ability to communicate effectively, both in oral presentations. • Evaluation: Clarity of speech, engagement with the audience, and the quality and effectiveness of visual communication.
  5. Potential for Broader Impact (15 points) • Description: Looks at how the applicant plans to scale or expand the project’s impact if given additional resources or opportunities. • Evaluation: Scalability of the project, thoughtfulness of the expansion plan, and potential for significant community or societal impact.

Award Categories and Prizes

Here are the award categories and their corresponding prizes:

  • NANA Presidential Humanitarian Award: $1500
  • Nishtarian Edhi Encouragement Award: $1000$
  • Dr. Hayat Zafar Philanthropic Award: $1000
  • Al-Khidmat Philanthropic Award: $750
  • Dr. Ahmad Saeed Khan Philanthropic Award: $750

Application Timeline and Instructions

Key Dates:

  • Application Submission: November 1st to December 15th (every year)
  • Interviews: December 15th to January 15th (every year) via Zoom
  • Award Ceremony: February (every year)

How to Apply:

  1. Prepare your application, ensuring it meets the required criteria.
  2. Submit your application via email to the NANA Philanthropic Selection Committee at: nanaphilanthropy@gmail.com
  3. Selected applicants will be invited for an interview on Zoom between December 15th and January 15th.
  4. Award winners will be announced and recognized at the award ceremony in February.

Expectations from the Award Winners

Responsibilities:

  • Planning and executing year-long activities at Nishtar Medical University (NMU)
  • Fostering a culture of volunteer work among students and faculty
  • Collaborating with NANA and NMU faculty for mentorship and guidance
  • Develop leadership skills among students
  • Enhance the university’s social responsibility initiatives
  • Follow NANA by laws and do not have conflict of interest while doing philanthropic activities
  • They should lead by example instead of one person mission, it should be a team work at NMU that should change the culture of Philanthropy work.
  • They must make sure they work as a team, to help NANA ease the work and guide the future generation to make a new leader like Edhi sb.
