Dr. Mukhtar graduated from Nishtar medical College in 1985. He was declared the Best Graduate of his session. He did one year of Internship in Nishtar in Medicine and Surgery, and went to England in 1986 where he did MRCP (UK) in 1990 and PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine from University of Birmingham (UK) in 1993. He got FRCP (Edin) in 2001.
He worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in Saudi Arabia from 1994-2000 and started a medicine residency in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA in 2001. After finishing his residency, he stayed at Geisinger as a Hospitalist.
